Jonas Plosky was born in Llandudno, North Wales in 1940. He moved to London at an early age where he studied at Hornsey College of Art before leaving to become a designer and illustrator. He has painted and exhibited all his life, travelling extensively throughout the British Isles in search of that craggy remoteness which features so vividly in his landscape and coastal scenes. His work has a Celtic feel both in colour and tone, and a strong affinity to his native North Wales draws him repeatedly to the themes of Blaenau Ffestiniog and the hill farms around Snowdonia. The landscape and its history is a powerful inspiration, in many of his oils the respect for the age of the stones around him, whether mountains of Welsh slate or pebbles on a western British beach, is palpable. The relation of man to this awe-inspiring environment is explored through his clever juxtaposition of figures in landscape, whether through an isolated figure on a lone foreshore or a small community at the foot of a valley. Jonas has been exhibiting at the Royal Academy since the early 1960s and at the Royal Society of British Artists. His paintings can be found in the permanent collections of Glasgow Art Gallery and Museums, The National Library of Wales and the University of Portland, Maine, USA.
