Bernard McMullen was born in Birmingham though his childhood was spent in the mining village of Hurley within the Warwickshire countryside. He joined the army aged only 15 and served for 22 years with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. In 1982 he was awarded the British Empire Medal for Gallantry. During his service career he toured the world, painting on the main streets of many cities and also in their backwaters. In the 1970s he adopted Manchester as his main source of subject matter, and settled locally. His paintings reflect the hustle and bustle and atmosphere of bygone days. In response to a growing demand for Bernard's pictures, his first published project was the McMullen Manchester Calendar, 1998. This proved so popular that his Calendar is now published each year. He also has paintings reproduced in limited edition prints, in greetings cards, Christmas cards, and on a select range of tableware and figurines with world-wide distribution. He has also had several sucsessful exhibitions, the one in 1994 at theCity of Salford Art Gallery being such a success that he appeared on television. His work has been acquired by many leading companies and organisations including Manchester United Football Club, BUPA, Legal and General Insurance and the Christie Cancer Appeal
