Alan Lowndes was born 1921 in Stockport, Cheshire, the fifth child of a Railway clerk. Left school at 14, apprenticed to a decorator. 1939 - 45 Army service in the Middle East, Italy and Austria. After the war studied painting at night school otherwise , self-taught. Worked part time at many jobs, including a period as textile designer. He had one man exhibitions thoughtout the world in places like, Manchester, London, New York and other prestigous places. A good book to aquire about his works is Alan Lowndes - Paintings 1948 - 1972 - Crane Kalman Gallery.
