Born in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. Studied at the Birmingham College of Art, then at St. Ives School of Painting and at Camberwell School of Art in the late 1940's. Exhibited widely internationally and in England, at the Redfern Gallery, New Art Centre and Austin/Desmond Fine Art. Elected RA in 1982 and knighted in 1998. The Tate Gallery and other public collections hold his work.
